As you may already know, the Subaru Outback is available in eight different trim levels for the 2023 model year. What you may not know, however, is all the differences between them. Included in this year’s assortment, one will find the following trim levels: Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Wilderness, and Limited XT. So, for example, what sets the 2023 Subaru Outback Onyx Edition XT apart from its fellow trim levels. As always, our team at Subaru of Rochester has everything you need to know, so keep on reading below!

Onyx Edition XT, Wilderness, and Limited XT Trim levels

Aside from more standard and available features, the main advantage of the Onyx Edition XT, Wilderness, and Limited XT trim levels is a 2.4-liter turbocharged SUBARU BOXER® 4-cylinder engine. This next-level engine produces up to 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, which is a massive upgrade over the 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER® 4-cylinder engine in the lower trim levels, as it only generates up to 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. Suffice it to say, the Onyx Edition XT, Wilderness, and Limited XT trim levels pack a much stronger punch under the hood. Now that we’ve established what these trim grades have in common, we must come back to our original question, what sets the 2023 Subaru Outback Onyx Edition XT apart?

Let’s start with one of its biggest strengths: fuel economy. The 2023 Subaru Outback Onyx Edition XT can achieve up to 23 miles per gallon in the city and 30 miles per gallon on the highway.* The Wilderness, on the other hand—which is powered by the exact same engine—comes up a little bit short with 22 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon on the highway.* While this is one good way to separate the Onyx Edition XT from the Wilderness, it doesn’t help with differentiating the Limited XT, which perfectly matches the fuel economy ratings of the Onyx Edition XT.* In other words, we still need to know what sets the 2023 Subaru Outback Onyx Edition XT apart from the Limited XT.

The key difference between the 2023 Outback Onyx Edition XT and the Limited XT is the exclusive interior and exterior elements of the Onyx Edition models. Only available on the Onyx Edition and Onyx Edition XT trim levels, one will find 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with black finish, special badging, and a custom two-tone interior. While the Limited XT has tons of other attractive features, it simply can’t match the exclusive characteristics of the Onyx Edition and Onyx Edition XT trim levels.
